wAFF

The fun-loving British DJ and producer wAFF has been immersed in the electronic music scene for over a decade and has progressed further as a versatile artist by fusing all of his passions like animals, spirituality, and veganism into his primary work of music. Aside from touring non-stop, he’s been especially involved with his environmentally-focused music label, NATURE, and is ready to return to Medellin, Colombia, this year to operate at the COMUNA 13 project.

His new music label NATURE took some time to design, for the dedicated visionary had several ideas in mind for the project and found it difficult in the beginning to envision what this label would entail. “How could I make this unique and stand out amongst all the other 10 million labels out there? What could I do differently?” After months of generating names and finding that 99% were already taken, wAFF elected the word “nature” but wanted to devise his own personal touch to it, so he used Crash Bandicoot as inspiration for the logo and gave the high-quality, well-designed artwork a totally new vibe. “There are so many amazing brands out there, so I aimed to be up there with the best or to at least stand out amongst them all… well, within our industry at least.” The real-life nature lover desired to set up a platform to release music he loved from remarkable artists, build a NATURE family, and release fresh new music that stands out and smashes the dance floors. The eclectic spirit loves all styles of music and plays a wide range of styles in his sets, so he wasn’t really looking to represent a specific sound, however, it will all mostly be club-focused. “I love everything from minimal, tech house, house, and techno, so if the music is good and it works, then there’s a good chance I’ll put it out.” It was also vital for him right from the very start to use his impressive brand to help save animals, humans, and the planet. So for each release, he utilizes the money to fund animal charities but will be soon helping people, and in some time, find other ways to help the planet. “It only felt right to me to do this, and it is one of the most special parts of this whole project, so I’m very happy.”

This will be his 3rd year hosting the COMUNA 13 project in Medellin, for his intent is to create a captivating experience for the community, get local sponsors involved, and have other DJs touring in the region join him. wAFF finds it to be one of the best experiences he’s ever had in his whole career. “After seeing the place, walking around, and meeting people, it just felt like the perfect idea! South America has the best vibe when it comes to music and dancing.” The free event has grown with time and the hype is so massive that even the government and major brands there have taken an interest. The progressive character sees it expanding into “a festival that won’t take away the core foundation of the experience, which is the connection amongst everyone on the streets” and relays how he would like to build some music schools and recording studios for the kids to learn how to DJ and make music. “My vision has always been to create label showcases around the world and I want my events to be like a whole experience from the moment you walk into the moment you leave. I have something already in the works, and it’s very ambitious, but I trust in my vision and believe it will all work out. I’ve never not accomplished something I’ve set out to do so far in my life, so I trust the process.”

Living a life of sobriety has been the way forward for him, for he’s come so far along over the past year and let go of things that were holding him back. “Don’t get me wrong, I still have fun from time to time, but I pick my battles.” The lighthearted adventurer is a lot calmer nowadays and really enjoys the quietness in life as his lifestyle has been very hectic for the past 13 years, so he’s just taking much better care of himself and focusing a lot more on his mental health and well-being. In his spare time, the self-proclaimed modern-day hippie loves to play computer games, make and play music, and roll on the floor with dogs.

Although the London-based DJ and producer has been in the scene for quite some time, acting has been and still is his dream. If he were to live in any film for the rest of his life in a fun alternate universe, it would be in Avatar. “Have you seen Lord of the Rings? With the hobbits that run around Middle-Earth? Well yeah, I’d describe myself as one of them, haha.” The Lord of the Rings fan loves the idea of being in Middle Earth, but in reality, it’d be horrendous and full of darkness. “So to live on Pandora and have a massive 9ft tall blue alien girlfriend while flying around on banshees all day shooting humans with giant arrows would be absolutely sick!”

Fresh off his U.S.-based tour, the go-getter is currently learning how to be a game developer and is working on a couple of his own VR games. “I’m hoping to get towards finishing one this year although it’s a really long process, so I’m sure I’ll need a couple of more years in reality.” His two main goals for the remainder of the year are to have everything in place to start his events so he can go full throttle at it in 2024 and to have all his music projects finished so he can have everything signed and released throughout the next year. “There’s lots to do, but it’s all exciting fun stuff… just how I like it!” As an accomplished artist in this competitive scene, he simply hopes to make people happy through his music, create memories for everyone, and be known for just giving people a good time. “I hope to reach my full potential and to fully do what I set out to do since day one. Then I can go back into my acting career once I feel like I’ve done all I needed to do in this scene!” Check out his latest EP Slapfunk out now on Hot Creations and support the creative soul now on Beatport and Instagram.
