Michael Sundius, known in the electronic music world as Rinzen, is more than just a DJ and producer. He’s an enigmatic artist with a vision to create immersive, colorful experiences through his music, which are rooted in the genres of house and techno. His compositions are a blend of melodic and cinematic elements, aiming to transport listeners into new realms. “I describe myself first and foremost as an electronic artist, and beyond that, as someone trying to build entire worlds with their music,” he says. This dedication to creating expansive auditory landscapes has become a defining feature of his work and is especially apparent in his recently released debut album, Bend to the Light.

Before delving into music production, Sundius was deeply embedded in the electronic music scene as a senior editor at Dancing Astronaut and contributor to Billboard. His passion for the genre was evident as he crafted features, interviewed artists, and reviewed events. This background provided him with an exclusive perspective on the music industry as he transitioned from a music journalist to an acclaimed DJ and producer. His approach to music is heavily influenced by his love for film and literature, for the bold character draws inspiration from the storytelling techniques found in these mediums, striving to create music that offers more than just a listening experience. His talent spans both DJing and production as he dedicates equal effort to mastering both crafts. “I’d love to be known as both an incredible DJ and producer,” he states. “I spend equal amounts of time in the pursuit of mastering both, and many of my heroes are the artists that have conquered both sides of the equation.”

The name Rinzen, meaning “a moment of sudden awakening” in Japanese, was inspired by an art piece Sundius encountered at Barcelona’s Modern Art Museum. This moniker encapsulates his ethereal, vivid music that sparks emotional experiences for his listeners. The name and meaning really spoke to the half-Japanese artist, emphasizing the personal connection and the deeper narrative he aims to weave through his music. The bright musician is proud to partially represent his Asian heritage, especially since there aren’t enough prominent Asian DJs and producers in the scene. “I’m proud to be from Los Angeles as well, doubly so when I’m playing in Europe or releasing music on non-US labels.” What makes L.A. stand out isn’t their clubs or cool music festivals, but their vibrant warehouse scene. “It’s the biggest in all of the U.S., and our unique offering is 100% the quality and quantity of great warehouse parties happening here every week. In these environments, you can truly see an artist let loose and deliver an uninhibited set to an open-minded and receptive audience.”

With his latest album completed and released, the devoted artist is excited about the future. “I’ve learned that I really enjoy the process of making albums and long-form content in general. So I now see myself as an album artist and will be recommitting to this process continously.” He plans to tour extensively and is already contemplating his next musical direction. “Currently, I’ll be going on tour for the next couple of months. Other than that, with my album done and released, I’m looking forward to carving out time to think about what music I want to create next,” he reveals. Despite the challenges of constant travel, which he admits can be taxing for someone who values physical activity, the grateful soul cherishes the opportunity to share his music globally. “At the end of the day, it’s not a lot to ask for when we have the privilege of getting to travel to distant cities to share our music,” he acknowledges. As he continues to tour and produce new music, Rinzen remains committed to his vision of crafting profound moments for his audience. Bend to the Light is out now on This Never Happened.
